My Stampede story by Randy Scritchfield

I heard about the Stampede from the PCCA website. I knew I had to do this so I planned 2 weeks vacation for it.

I bought my Pinto last July from a guy in Dallas TX. When I got it home (Springfield, MO) I found out that the car would barely move on it's own power. It had a 302 from a 1974 and a C4 transmission from a 1966 something. It also has a 9" rear end, and that turned out to be the best part. It's from a 1957 passenger vehicle which means it's the shortest rear end ford made, it fit perfect! But it had 4.11 gears and a spool. I knew if I was going on the Stampede I would have to rebuild or replace the entire drive train.

I pulled the tranny and engine in March of this year to rebuild both of them. What I didn't expect was all the rain and Tornadoes. I don't have a garage, so I have to do all my work outside and this caused me to postpone my rebuild till late April. I finally got the newly rebuilt engine and transmission in the car the last week before the Stampede, but I still had to have the rear end rebuilt.

I sent the car to a specialty shop to do the work. They put a Detroit locker posi and 3.25 gears in the car. I got the car back the Friday before the Stampede began. I never had a chance to test the car for reliability so I knew I couldn't drive it to Carlisle Pa. That's why I trailered the car up to the Kansas Speedway.

My wife also became ill from an bone infection in her heel of her foot. There was no-way I would leave her crippled and go to Carlisle. I stayed home and took care of her for the 2 weeks of my vacation. But I did get to go to the Kansas Speedway.

And I will always be thankful for the memory of making 8 laps at almost 100 mph! It scared the Crap out of my son. Hehehehe!!!!!
